CHAPTER SUMMARY: The rise of civilization started in the prehistory era and ended around c. 2300 B.C. There were three stages to the development of humans, the hominids, Homo sapiens and Homo sapiens sapiens. The earliest hominids, humanlike creatures that walked upright, and lived in Africa at least four million years ago. The Homo sapiens developed in Africa 200,000 years ago, they later migrate to Europe and Asia, they also mastered fire. Homo sapiens sapiens meaning "wise wise" were they first creatures to show rapid brain growth and they were the first to move out of Africa. Two main terms that are crucial to the chapter are anthropology and archaeology. Anthropology is the study of human life and culture based on artifacts and human fossils. Archaeology is the study of past societies through an analysis of the items people left behind. Another key term that is important to this chapter is civilization. A civilization is made up of six characteristics that are cities, government, art, writing, religion, and social structure.
FIVE EVENTS THAT HAPPENED IN THIS CHAPTER:
1. Early hominids discovered fire, which helped them when they moved from the tropics to colder regions.
2. During the neolithic age they started making tools, crafts, and weaponry which was traded to other civilizations.
3. In this chapter we can see the impact of trade in every civilization and how it effects their growth.
4. In the Summerian culture writing was developed, this was a huge development because this is how they recorded all of their information.
5. The wheel was also invented which largely impacted the transportation industry because you could travel anywhere basically two times fast then before.
